Eid al-Adha Celebrations in Malaysia

The celebration of Hari Raya Haji reminds us that Hari Raya Haji is one of the important Islamic festivals in Malaysia. Hari Raya Haji, also known as Eid al-Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice, is a festival celebrated by Muslims all over the world.

On this holy day, Muslims will perform the Eid al-Adha prayer, perform sacrificial rituals, visit graves, ask for forgiveness, and enjoy food with family and friends.

Eid al-Adha also teaches about sacrifice, obedience, and sincerity, as well as the importance of sharing sustenance with those in need.

Hari Raya Hajj commemorates the unwavering faith of Prophet Ibrahim, who was commanded by Allah to sacrifice his son as a test of obedience. As the story goes, Allah intervened at the last moment and instead provided a goat for sacrifice. The story of Prophet Ibrahim highlights the importance of trust and complete surrender to the will of Allah.

This worship is commemorated through the act of sacrifice, where livestock is sacrificed and the meat is distributed to those in need.

The act of sharing the sacrificial meat with those in need symbolizes generosity, humility, and community welfare.

Muslims gather early in the morning at mosques and open fields for special congregational prayers, followed by sermons.

Cows, goats, and sheep are sacrificed at designated mosques or community centers. The meat is divided into three parts—for the family, for friends or neighbors, and for the needy.

Volunteers and mosque committees distribute sacrificial meat to low-income households and charitable organizations.

Hajj Pilgrimage

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam and is obligatory for every Muslim who is physically and financially able to perform it at least once in their lifetime. It involves travelling to Mecca and Medina, as well as performing several key practices such as standing at Arafat, circumambulating the land, and others.

The Hajj pilgrimage is carried out in the month of Zulhijjah, starting from 8 Zulhijjah to 13 Zulhijjah.

Pillars of Hajj:
There are five pillars of Hajj that must be performed, namely:

Ihram: Intention to begin the Hajj pilgrimage from the miqat.
Standing at Arafat: Being on the Plain of Arafat during the time of standing (9th Dhul Hijjah).
Tawaf of Ifadah: Circumambulate the Kaaba seven times.
Sai: Walk back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times.
Shaving or cutting hair short: As a sign of the end of the prohibition of ihram.

Although there are various challenges and trials that pilgrims will face, there are also advantages and glory in facing them. The challenges given by Allah SWT are certainly to educate the human soul which may sometimes forget and neglect the purpose of its creation. All these challenges and trials are the best means to educate the soul of a Muslim when performing the Hajj pilgrimage in addition to seeking His pleasure and being able to train oneself to be a Muslim who is always obedient to his Creator.

Although there is less focus on visiting than on Aidilfitri, many families still gather to share a meal and reflect on spiritual values.

Eid al-Adha is also a time to be grateful for all the blessings that Allah has given us, be it the blessings of health, sustenance, or the blessings of faith.
