Every year on July 7, the historic city of George Town in Penang marks Georgetown World Heritage City Day, commemorating its UNESCO inscription in 2008.

George Town—and its sister city of Melaka—was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for “Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca” in 2008, recognized under criteria (ii), (iii), and (iv) for outstanding cultural exchange and architectural heritage. This designation has spurred extensive conservation efforts and renewed civic pride.
