Celebration of the Day of Arafah in Malaysia

The Day of Arafah is an important Islamic festival celebrated annually on the 9th day of Dhul-Hijjah, in the Islamic Hijri calendar. On the day of Arafah, pilgrims go to Mount Arafah to perform a ritual prayer. On this day, Muslims in their respective countries are encouraged to observe a voluntary fast called the Fast of Arafah.

For Muslims who do not perform the Hajj, the Day of Arafah is a day of fasting, prayer, and seeking forgiveness, believed to be able to erase previous and future sins.

There are many advantages of the Day of Arafah, including:

  • Standing at Arafat is one of the pillars of Hajj. – Abdulrahman bin Ya'mur narrated that the Prophet Muhammad SAW said: "Hajj is Arafah." (Hadith narrated by At-Tirmidhi)
  • Eid for Muslims – Uqbah bin Amir RA narrated that the Messenger of Allah SAW said: “The Day of Arafah, the Day of Sacrifice and the days of Tashreeq (11, 12 and 13 Dhul-Hijjah) are our Eid days, and they are days of eating and drinking.” (Hadith narrated by Abu Daud, At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa’i)
  • The greatness of praying on the Day of Arafah – Abdullah bin 'Amr narrated that the Prophet SAW said: “The best supplication is the supplication on the Day of Arafah.” (Hadith narrated by At-Tirmidhi)
  • Fasting on that day expiates the sins of the year before and after. – Abu Qatadah RA narrated that when the Messenger of Allah SAW was asked about fasting on the Day of Arafah, he said: “Fasting on that day expiates the sins of the past and the coming year.” (Hadith narrated by Muslim)
  • The day of forgiveness and deliverance from hellfire – Aisha RA narrated that the Prophet SAW said: “There is no day on which more of HIS servants are freed from the fire of Hell than on the Day of Arafah.” (Hadith narrated by Muslim)

Muslims around the world connect spiritually with those performing the Hajj, strengthening global bonds of faith.

Muslims spend the day in increased worship, including reciting prayers, remembering Allah, and being grateful. Since the Day of Arafah is before Eid, Muslims also make practical and spiritual preparations for Hari Raya Hajj.
